Saturday April 19th is Earth day and at 9am in Brook Peterson Park (1200 Oak Avenue) the city will be getting the parks ready for spring.

There will be a tree planting, breakfast goodies and a photo with the Tree City USA banner.

Then at about 9:30, each Adopt a Park group, and volunteers, will head off to their city parks to perform some spring cleaning.  That way, when it gets really nice out,  the kids will have a nice safe place to play.

Please bring your own work gloves, rakes and friends.  No need for garbage bags, those will be waiting for you.

Ohh, now I think this is where we sing “Plant a tree, trees for America.  Plant a tree today for all the world to see.”

They have a large, 7200 square foot building, building off of highway 5 behind Mr. Movies and next to Holiday. And they are more than willing to give free tours during business hours.

I haven’t been there myself, but will be keeping it in mind as we have a cat that needs medication twice a day. If we can’t find family to take care of him when we go on vacation, it’ll be nice to know we have a second choice.

If you’ve driven down highway 5, you can’t miss the construction of the new Walgreen store. It’s located on the corner of 284 and Hwy 5 and has been making quite a few advancements over the past few months.

The new Walgreens store won’t be open anytime soon, but at the rate they build business’ these days, a late spring or summer opening shouldn’t be that hard to meet.

Waconia will soon have someplace to go for cutting edge electronic needs. RadioShack is moving in across fro Kwik Trip in the same strip mall as Legacy Liquors.

I’m not usually a big fan of RadioShack but it’ll be a nice addition. We currently don’t have anyplace to go regarding VOIP, iPod accessories, HD TV/radios, cellphones or computer accessories. I think RadioShack will fill a nice void for our town.

Thanks to JP, I found out that Nancy’s Landing closed. It was the fanciest place in town that I knew of and was a shock to me when I heard.

Their last day was September 29 and the new owners are already working on getting the Lobster Shack up and running. The new-england style restaurant will be an interesting addition to Waconia. I’m not a big seafood fan, but I’m already very intrigued with the idea of the Lobster Shack.

All summer, pained sailboat statues have decorated the town. However, your changes to see them are going fast.

On September 27th, the sailboats will be auctioned off at the Waconia Lakeside Ballroom at 8pm.

The boats are a part of Sailboat Regatta which has had about 25 boats decorating the town all summer.

If you still want to catch a few boats before they disappear, you better get around town fast. You only have a few short days!

Out on highway 5, on the east side of town, they recently put in a strip mall with only one store; a liquor store. However, the ideas of what else to put in that area are swarming.

It’s been confirmed that a Kline Bank is coming in but I’ve also heard the rumors of Perkins and a KFC. Possibly an IHOP too?

Waconia could use a few new restaurants. Between Pizza and Subs, we don’t really have a lot of variety. However, the addition of more stores/resturants out there kind of makes me sad.

You know it’s spring when the orange comes out in full force. And this year, the construction starts off with county road 10 and includes most roads on the east side of town.

County road 10 will close April 23rd and be open again, hopefully, by mid-November. They are going to modify the road to meet up with the stoplights just to the east of where it comes out now. They will also add drainage, turn lanes and bigger shoulders which is good news for the bikers.

Unfortunately, county road 10 is the main road to take over to Chaska. With the road closed, the already busy Highway 5 is the only alternative.

To make it worse, Highway 5 will be getting medians, turn lanes and better striping this summer too. No closures, but you can expect delays.

What’s one more headache? Starting in July, highway 284 will be closed from 5 to 212. This project includes mill and overlay which I think means re-surfancing. Good news here is that’s only a month project. But other construction on 284 and Sparrow Road will cause even more problems as a roundabout is put in place. Talk about getting fancy. This roundabout could take three months though!

Those are the biggest headaches and if you drive east or south out of Waconia, you will surely see road construction, additional traffic and a sad change as the farmland continues to change into city.

The 1st Street Bakery is now open and I’m so excited. I made my first visit today and it’s very nice. New, clean and full of doughnuts. Who could ask for more?

They must have a meeting area somewhere, but I didn’t see it. I could hear a crowd of people, but they weren’t up front. So if you are going to have a social event, it might be worth giving them a call.

I only got one doughnut, and a milk, and it was great. I’m not sure how much a doughnut costs as I wasn’t paying attention to that. I was to busy looking around.

Some may thing that the Mackenthun’s bakery is a real bakery, but nothing in a grocery store can match the atmosphere and quality of a real bakery doughnut.

Now I don’t have to drive to Chaska or fantasize about a good morning doughnut. I guess that’s a bad thing though as it’s way to close and I’ll have to hold myself back from visiting daily.
